For obvious reasons, I'm going to try and keep most of this fairly vague.
For the past few months I've been working remote for a company that I had, for awhile, thought was pretty great. They also seemed to really appreciate my work, said I provided insight they really needed, etc.
Trouble started about two months ago, when I was faced with a possible emergency that would conflict with a meeting. I let one of the meeting coordinators know about the possibility beforehand. I did end up being late. The next day I had another meeting that my calendar didn't notify me about. Manager talked to me about how he had to report both incidents to HR (even after I specified I had warned a meeting coordinator about the issue with the first incident) and continued infractions could lead to termination.
Things seemed to be going ok, great even as I got more comfortable in my role. I had a lot of great feedback both from people within the company and those outside we worked with. Then, just yesterday, I get called into a meeting about my “performance issues.” Infractions that had apparently been reported to HR without my knowing included: Leaving a manager meeting slightly early (my partner got a call from his work in the same room, I told my manager about the issue but was fine finishing out the meeting, and my MANAGER asked if I wanted to go ahead and just end the call), not having a report done in time for another meeting (a report I relied on someone else to finish) and leaving another meeting slightly early (I got disconnected for a minute and tried to reconnect, and when I did nobody was in the room, and nobody asked where I was, so I assumed it just wrapped up when I disconnected anyway).
Bringing up these explanations did nothing, because the decision was already made.
I was honestly so confused throughout the process because as they were firing me they kept going on about how I did amazing work, I was very skilled, and many of them were happy to offer glowing references for me at other jobs. And the whole time I'm thinking, then why are you firing me?
I worked my butt off and already have other interviews lined up. But I just still don't understand this at all. I did wonder about discrimination, because I was the only person at the company who fell under a specific classification, but I have no proof that this was actually a contributing factor. I know there were several times other people were late to meetings we were jointly running or had various tech issues, and I never reported that to HR, because why on earth would I?
I guess I would just want some perspective. Is what they did reasonable? What sense does it make? Maybe it's pointless to think about that but I can't help it, considering I'm now scrambling to make sure I can pay off my bills this month.
