I worked as paralegal for Large firm that I left in 2001 (the firm was under investigation for illegal tax shelters), and I left to make more money – in mortgages bec 2000-2005 was that gigantic giveaway of free money to very unqualified home buyers (as an aside you’ll be happy to hear that owner of that mortgage company is the guy going to jail for giving Manafort $16M in unqualified $$$ in exchange for a seat on the trump chump train, he just started his time in prison lol), and as a paralegal I was making $55k/yr. 2001, Chicago.
I left full time work in 2004 after starting a family, took 17 years “off” working in offices. Started two of my own companies (home daycare working w YWCA and DCFS, it was legit, taxed biz), I also began a home painting biz, and murals, which I still operate tho not actively working at it bec winter (I do large scale outdoor murals).
I decided I’d go back to the safety, $, benefits and added corp ins for my family, and to my not-surprise bec I’ve been railing about wage stagnation for decades like a god damned foghorn, I started out doing same job in legal, doing same work — and making that SAME GIF DAMNED SALARY AS TWENTY-ONE YEARS AGO!
Just what the fuck! Fuck this The market dictates your salary!! This is oppression by the wealthy.
I’ve been working 10 months now and coming up to review time and want to ask for a $20k raise citing all of this, knowing it’ll be scoffed and maybe I’ll get a 3% raise….
It’s so demoralizing. That’s all, thanks for reading.
