Manager not quite sure what he wants

At my former job, I had a manager that gave me the feedback that I needed to try to take more time off as I worked too much. I was working roughly 3200 hours per year for the last 2 years. So I said “OK, I need these days off” and provided a full written schedule up front. Took my full allotment of time off plus a few unpaid days with prior approval for all of them. Finally, after six months of not taking any time off and working almost 1900 hours, I got called in and told they were letting me go for “being too big of a liability” due to the fact I drove a company truck (pick up not commercial) and I was working over 14 hours per day for more than 3 days in a row. It was one of those “damned if you do, damned if you don't” situations. After this, I haven't taken another job as an employee and just work for myself. The pay is less consistent but the freedom is glorious!
