my manager has made a policy where everybody in my department is “required” to put their phone in a basket on her desk.
i have been refusing to put my phone in, and got an general speech about how our general manager wants (only) our department to keep their phones in the basket and finds it disrespectful not to do so.
i work for a company that is 90% men. my department is all women, and includes probably about half of the women in the store total. so none of the men who work here are required to turn in their phone. i don’t even want to get into the nuances of what this rule means in this context, other than that it appears sexist and unfair.
my fiance says i’m overreacting and it’s not that serious to be without my phone for 8 hours. i’m just not interested in being treated like a high schooler.
would you put your phone in the basket? do i have any real consequences for refusing?
