My boss : I just got a job offer for the government. I rejected it.
Me : Why? Don't they pay better than what your salary is?
Her : Yes but I wouldn't be happy. I love my job here and I live a comfortable life.
Me : But if you'd get the same job for a better salary you'd go?
Her : No. I love the team here and all. Would you go for a better pay?
Me : Yes of course. This minimum wage isn't livable. I mean : I calculated, and here, in canada, we'd need 27$/h to be able to live. And businesses are protesting against a 15$/h minimum wage.
Boss : Yes but think about it, if you own a business and let's say you've got 100 employees working 8 hours a day for 10$/h, each day you pay them a total of 8000$. Now let's say you get 20k in profits, well, you get away with 12k a day. Then you gotta pay rent for the place, then you gotta pay for the stuff you bought and you finish the day with 5k.
Then imagine if your employees get paid 15$/h. Then you pay 12k to them. Then you will have 1k left at the end of the day. And life is gonna be harder for you.
My boss : Well, think about this : wages get bigger gradually, now at once, your hypotetical boss is very well off with his 30k a month salary, and your employees can barely afford a cheap appartment. All for the low, low cost of 15$/h. Now think about it this way : those employees can BARELY afford their cheap appartments. Does it seem fair to you?
My boss : Yes.
Now, after this conversation I'm like (to myself) “WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK? How can ANYBODY be so out of touch with reality.”
People are crazy everyone, and they're crazier to think that a lazy dude who got his business from his daddy deserves 30k a month while someone who works their butts off should get less than 2400$ a month.
