Meetings: TTWWADI anachronistic trash we should dump or useful critical business tool?

I've begun to think meetings may be from the stinking trash pile of TTWWADI (That's the way we've always done it.) historical-inertia driven rote dogmatic practices that may be either wastefully unnecessary or actually counter-productive, especially given the communications and collaboration tech we have access to, almost for free. Why do we keep pouring time, effort, travel and other resources into meetings, especially those everyone agrees “could have been an e-mail” or are entirely useless and unnecessary? /rant-off cf: cargo cults
