So until recently, I worked at mccormick's flagship plant in hunt valley on one of the production lines until this week when I started a nice desk job at HQ.Most of the line was in the un-airconditioned part of the plant which fucking sucks in the summer, and they were trying to transition every production team to a silly 24/7 schedule that was 12 hour days that went something like, monday on tuesday off, wed thru friday on 4 more days off etc. It wasn't rolled out on my line yet,but I wasn't waiting around for it.
Now,my job itself aside from the physical discomfort of the heat wasn't all that bad,but I wasn't about to work 12 hour days where my only start time choices were 6am or 6pm. This past july, with some inspiration from you guys, I started looking on the internal network every day and applying to everything not 24/7 I was even remotely qualified for. 18 interviews for various jobs and 8 months later, I landed a job as an admin assistant at our headquarters down the road from the plant.
Instead if going in at 130pm and getting off at 10 with the prospect of 24/7 looming over my head, sweating like crazy, and being covered in taco seasoning, I now work normal hours at a nice desk. I go in at 730am and get off at 4pm. OT or weekends in this job are exceptionally rare. Our headquarters is about 50 years newer than the plant and it shows. Windows and natural light everywhere,FAR BETTER amenities across the board from the food to the coffee machines,to life enrichment activities on campus. I get along well with everybody I work with and my new boss is cool. Oh yeah and I got a 2 dollar pay raise. I just bought a house, so having these hours means I can get a restaurant job again to make some extra cash.
Just to preempt any questions:
I didn't quit the company because my old role really wasn't terrible and I got along well with my coworkers and boss there too. The benefits are also, relative to american standards, very good.
Tried to get a raise at my old job by getting my next tech level….you guys know how that song and dance goes.
