My boss had been lying & manipulating me!

I was a part of a great company which many people wish to be a part of. To give you guys an idea, the company has operations in over 150+ countries and will be listed on NASDAQ soon. Anyways! When I had joined it, I thought I’d spend at least two years there. In the beginning, my boss was really nice, the workload was fair and even though we were understaffed, he reassured that they’re hiring and a new resource will be there soon! Several weeks into the job, I found out that not only I was underpaid but no one was being interviewed either! I did not react or say anything to anyone except that I verified these information through several well-trusted sources within the company and found this contradiction to be true. I am 25 which was fairly young than my co-workers, pursuing my Master on the weekends…

I am 25 which was fairly young than my co-workers, pursuing my Master on the weekends and would express my willingness to grow in my field during casual conversations. My manager thought I’d be happy being his little puppy and take his word as gold since I am a fairly nice person in real life who hates confrontation and disagreements. I’d rather agree with my manager, do the job & go home than argue since I am not paid enough to care! He’d “big bro” me a lot and advise me only to manipulate me! I found my ideas being mentioned to other people without me being given my credit and even caught him lying about various things at various instances so I’d play along!

During all this time, my boss started to act like a major douche and overworked me to the fullest. He’d again reassure that the new resources are coming soon as he is in the process of getting the requisitions approved from the senior management (which was false). While all of this was happening, another person who was displeased with his attitude quit and gave in a week’s notice so naturally his workload fell on me too.

Please note that I had not taken a single leave for over four months and would still be sitting late with no overtime.

I started to apply for different positions, all while my mental health was deteriorating and during this time my coworker revealed that he himself is drained. He also shared how the manager’s thought process does not really align with his work ethic and he has been actively applying for jobs!

Luckily, we both got great offers, resigned and had our last day together within six months.

After I resigned, I was offered a raise of over 90%, a promotion in my designation & grade and reduction in workload since majority of the work of our department was reliant on me! I refused it because I could not trust my manager!

What I learned from this ordeal was that no job is worth ruining your mental health.

At the end of the day we’re merely a factor of production for the owners/board of directors who could not give a fuck about their employees, specially those at bottom of the hierarchy.

Use your own judgements and verify every thing that your line manager says as there is a huge chance they’re bullshitting and manipulating you!

Anyways! I’ll be joining my new job in a couple of weeks and I am really nervous! But also relieved that I got out of my old job on time!

I let the HR know about everything during the exit interview and did not hide anything!
