I’m 17 and work at a fast food place. Just trying to save up for a car and have some disposable income so I don’t have to ask my parents for money as often. I get home from school around 4:30, and go to work from 5 to 10. I usually make the fries and I’m damn good at it.
The other day at work I asked my manager if I could go on break sometime soon since I hadn’t eaten yet and wanted to have what’s basically my dinner. He then told me “actually, you don’t have to get a break if you work five hours or less. For non-minors it’s six.” I work exactly five hours. I told him to his face “well that’s bullshit” (casual environment so he didn’t care) and he just shrugged. Looked me dead in the eye and shrugged it off knowing he could’ve sent me on break and everyone there would be fine because we were incredibly slow. Thursday nights aren’t bumping at fucking Wendy’s. The only thing that kept me from walking out was knowing my friend was about to start working there too and I had to be there to make sure they do alright.
I called off the entire weekend just to piss him off though lol. I had two nine hour shifts in a row. I’m not gonna put my whole ass into a fry cook job if I’m not gonna get ten minutes to sit down and eat for the first time since school lunch.
Same boss that always misgenders me, knowing I use he/him pronouns.
Am I overreacting to this? If not, what can I do about it? This is my first job and I feel he’s taking advantage of that.
