I work at an animal boarding facility, attached to a vet hospital.
We have been short staffed for MONTHS. For some reason, my boss stopped hiring two months ago. Just.. removed the job post and stopped looking.
My boss has also been rejecting boarding requests due to “staffing issues”. I have rejected client after client for this reason.
One of my coworkers is on medical leave, so my department is run by two people now: me, and a part-timer. Neither of us can take time off without making the other one come in on their day off. I feel totally fucking trapped.
My boss is in this vicious cycle where: we are too short staffed for boarding reservations, so we cannot take more. Since we are not taking any reservations, we aren't making any money. Since we aren't making any money, we can't hire more people.
This is ridiculous. I've already had several talks with my boss about raising the pay rate (he got stood up for several interviews when he was looking) and hiring more people. He has done neither. He's not even looking.
I'm searching for a job right now, but I really want the right fit so it's taking me a while.
Can somebody please explain to me the logic behind this? Normally my boss is very kind, compassionate, and responsive to our needs. But as of late he is making decisions that I cannot understand.
