I work as a handyman in a retirement community in VA. They allowed me to live here at a severely reduced rent for six months while I work here. The whole process was sketchy and rushed and I admit I should have taken more precautions but these days we all know how hard it is to find an offer like this. Well the idea was I would be able to fix maintenance issues for the community when no other crew member was available.
The past four weeks of my life since starting here have been an absolute rollercoaster. They dug up my personal life, forced me to talk about my sexual orientation, tried to force my wife and I into a separation (whole other story) have refused to train me while simultaneously riding my ass about not learning or pulling my weight.
I was keeping my head down and going with it until today when my two supervisors really crossed the line.
Friday night I got the call to go fix some stuff. No biggie, I let my supervisor know I would be clocking in and he got pretty shitty with me and said it wasnt his business as I had discussed it with our main boss (this did NOT happen incidentally). I spoke to my other supervisor who of course told me “don't work for free man”.
Today that changed. The one who got shitty pulled me aside to tell me that we would be going with the plan our boss “talked about with me”. Again this never happened. He proceeds to tell me the reduced rent I pay is what they are considering payment for my overtime. I was so shocked. He proceeds to give me a few more veiled threats basically saying “don't clock in next time or we will raise your rent”.
I'm shocked, scared to do anything wrong, in a city I've always wanted to live but NEVER expected the hellride I've been on.
FUCK this capitalism nightmare
