We were having a meeting discussing my recent promotion offer and who would be taking over my current role. At the end of the discussion he asked if I have ever talked about my pay with any of my coworkers. I responded with “why are asking?” That is when he dropped the “it is illegal to discuss compensation with fellow coworkers”
I almost fell out of my seat with shock. I then proceeded to inform him of the laws put in place to protect employees from punishment or retaliation from employers. I was in absolute disbelief I had to inform the CEO of the company of labor laws.
The conversation lasted about ten minutes ending with him stating he wasn’t disagreeing with me but also not agreeing with me. He continued to go on and tell me how unprofessional it is to talk about and the reasons he pays people the wages they make. Which leads me to my next point, he explained he pays off of experience and skill level.
The person that is onboarding to my role has zero experience (I have 6 years) and was offered the exact same pay as me. This has frustrated me to the point where I would rather put my notice in then take this promotion.
Should I quit?
Edit: I have been job searching for 5 months but I have been on edge about what to apply for. I work in supply chain and want to get out.
