So my brother recently started a job at a community college where he basically signs on to a google meeting, and students can join the meeting to be matched with a 1 on 1 tutor. He tutors Chem to college student seeking their degrees.
He gets paid 25 cents above minimum wage.
This is a highly specialized job that requires communication/teaching skills and a strong education. He's damn good at his job.
Well, he's also a very punctual person. He liked to get to where he needs to go 10ish minutes before, “just in case”. So, he clocks in to work and joins the meetings 10 minutes before his shift. If someone comes with a question, he will help, even if its technically before his designated hours. He is actually working.
He recently got an email from his supervisor bashing him for coming early, saying, and I quote, “We have an expectation for our employees not to come in more than three minutes before their shift. You have been consistently signing in more than five minutes before your hours.”
That must be the most BS I have ever heard. Normal people would be glad my bro is signing in early. But no, the biggest community college system in my state is too poor to pay him for 5-10 minutes every shift. Sad. Typical tutors get paid more than triple what he makes now, anyway.
Thoughts?
