My coworker's ill mother suddenly passed the other day. She passed on a Wednesday. My other coworkers and I were discussing when we think she'll be back.
I go “oh I would assume at least a month-” and then they all started laughing. I just give them a confused look and they go, “Uh you only get three days bereavement before you have to go back to work.” I'm sorry what? This is her mother. Not an aunt, not a cousin – her fucking mother. Three days?! I go “wow well when my mother passes I'm not taking only three days. Y'all aren't seeing me for at least a week. Maybe two tops.” And they just laughed again and said something about young people not understanding how the world works today.
THREE DAYS. Your mother passes away and you only get three days to be sad about it, then you go back to work and pretend everything is okay. HOW IS THIS LEGAL? We aren't even given time to grieve – just process it and move on. You're given no time to sort out financials, no time to sort the house or any items that need to be divided out. THREE DAYS. I call bullshit. This needs to change.
