My friend hasn’t been paid in two months?

My friend works for a local artisan’s business where he rents a space to sell furniture but also works for the company itself (running the register, cleaning, customer service, etc.) It was casually mentioned me today that his boss hasn’t paid him in two months & I was dumbfounded. I would’ve quit the second she mentioned holding my pay so I’m not sure what he is doing but still, not his fault. This absolutely cannot be legal right? He is close “friends” with his boss & but I literally cannot get past this, if she was truly his ‘friend’, his pay would’ve NEVER been touched. From my understanding, she likes to say that he needs to wait to cash his check or just will simply not give it to him so the store’s account doesn’t bounce but I truly find this hard to believe because they are CONSTANTLY selling refinished…

Moral of the story; is this legal and how can I try to emphasize how badly he is being fucked over without overstepping? I’m really worked up over this and can’t really seem to let this go lmao.
