My Job is Done Entirely On a Laptop. My Workplace is Ending Work From Home

like the title says, my job is done entirely on a laptop. We have a company VPN installed on the laptop too. During COVID lock downs, we worked from home with 0 issues. Starting in May 2022, we started being gently pushed to work in the new office building the company just bought. Today, we get this message. For clarity, the Company that gives me my paychecks is called Act Talent. They are a contracting company that provides workers for other businesses. The Company that hired Act Talent is called GM Cruise. Cruise is an autonomous vehicle company that prides itself on helping to make the world a greener place and wants to hopefully replace most, if not all, cars on the road today with autonomous ones. A lofty goal that I support. However, forcing your employees to drive into work when they can work from home is not green.…

However, forcing your employees to drive into work when they can work from home is not green.

Forcing your employees to drive even farther to go into work just because you bought a new office building that is close to where the C-level executives live but adds 40 minutes to the commute of everyone else, is not green.

Cruise allows act talent to treat employees like shit.
They offer crap benefits.
In the interview I was told they were looking for a person to be with the company for at least 5 years and that there is plenty of promotion opportunities.

Yesterday I found out that the department I work in offers no raises.
No cost of living adjustments.
No promotions.

Im looking for another job and filed for an ADA accommodation to work from home while I look for a new job.

My first instinct was to try and get a union going but after looking deeper into it, that is not a possibility. The fact that I work for act talent and not cruise complicates it a lot.

The good news is that 90% of my department (which has less than 20 people across two teams) is feeling the same way as me.

The bonus good news is that my team was created by my manager earlier last year. He is young ~22-25years old and started my team himself. He has also found it very difficult to staff it with competent people. This will be devastating when we all quit for better jobs at the same time.

If anyone wants to find them online and ask why they are making Climate Change worse by requiring employees to come into the office every day, I say go for it.
