My job refuses to fire me, even though I cannot afford the buyout

Hello all! Longtime viewer but first time poster. I work as an MMJ reporter at a small local television news station in a rural area. I’m keeping things confidential (even though I know that’s unpopular) just to be safe. Basically, I’m contractually bound and my buyout is $3,000. I can’t afford this and I want my employment terminated. This would mean I would only have to adhere to the company’s non-compete but I’m getting out of the business so it’s no big deal. I’m getting married, have a daughter on the way, and my coworkers think I should leave and not come back. I’m not too worried about legal action but that’s always a possibility. What should I do? I can answer any questions below too.
