My old employer pays staff as last priority – surprised when I left

I took on a second job to help with the mortgage. Initially, he said he will pay at the end of the week. Doesn't. Then it was end of the month. Still unable to meet that timeframe. Every time I follow up on my pay, he says he “needs to clear it with the accountant first” or “there's been an accident [something broke in the workplace] and fixing it needs to be first priority”. One day, he told me his friend was also hiring. I ended up taking his friend's job and was juggling both at once before things got busy. When it did get busy, I chose to leave his business as his friend paid on time and the workplace was a lot closer. He acted all surprised. Said I betrayed him and jumped ship to a better opportunity.

Its nearly the end of July now and he still hasn't paid my last paycheck (for June). Despite all this, he still thinks he has the moral high ground. I have followed up my pay with him twice now – he can't even be bothered to respond. He will likely gossip more to his friend if I decide to take any kind of action over it. Fml.
