I'm not sure if this fits here, but it has been a year, and I would like to share my quitting story. It isn't super exciting, but I would still like to share, and there isn't very much dialogue. I was working at a chain chicken fast food restaurant that is only in the south east of the US that is known for being waaay to expensive for fast food, though they have pretty dope salads.
Last year, the Wednesday before Easter 2021, I was in a single vehicle car accident, and long story short, I did some permanent damage to my shoulder (for those of you who may be curious, I severed the tendons in the shoulder of my dominant arm, though I am better, it still is in a lot of pain and I still have to do PT). I was in a sling for about 2 to 2.5 months, but about a month after my accident, I quit. I was an assistant manager. It wasn't 100% because of the injury that I quit, but it was a large contributing factor.
The people involved are Cathy the Store Manager, John the District Manager, Sally another assistant manager, and Nate my roommate and an employee. Also Sally started having it out for me after I officially became a manager after completing my training, I'm guessing because I was hired on as a manager in training due to previous management experience and age (she was 19 and I was, at the time, 27) instead of working my way up, but I have no idea if that is really why. She targeted me, and tried to write me up after my accident for things like not lifting High-Fructose Corn Syrup boxes (40-50lbs, I had a weight limitation of 5lbs) for the soda machine or only working in the Front of House and not in the Back of House because I was under strict limitations from the ER doctors due to my injury. Sally was the same level as me and Cathy told her multiple times that she was not able to write me up as she was not my boss, and she couldn't write me up because of not doing things I was not able to do under the limitations I had on me anyway, as that could cause litigation.
So, a few weeks after the accident, I had a doctors appointment so my car insurance could help out with my medical bills. This was the only appointment I was able to get before I was no longer able to finish filing my claim but to too much time having passed. Not a lot of doctors offices in my area, at the time, were accepting new patients, and a lot of them still had strict limitations on occupancy and appointments. I was going to drop off Nate at work, as he went in 3 hours before me, then I was going to go to my appointment then head to work. Sally messaged me while I was about to leave to ask me to come in early as she wanted to leave early, in her fist text she didn't tell me why she wanted to leave early. I told her no, and that as soon as I was done dropping off Nate, I had somewhere I needed to be and it was important. She then sent me three other texts, that I didn't answer as I was driving at that point and then she called me and kept repeating that I needed to come in early as she needed to take her car to a mechanic or she was going to wreck and die, which was an over exaggeration, in my opinion (she would have left at 3 PM, more than enough time to get to a mechanic, and it wasn't that she scheduled an appointment, because I heard from her roommates later that she just brought it in as a walk in.). I refused her three times in that call and she reused to drop it, so I snapped at her that I'll be in at 2 and hung up. My appointment was at 1, and it was a 30 min drive from the doctors office, so I had to miss my appointment. When I got in at 2, she was all happy and laughing, and I just couldn't control it, I went off at her. I told her that thanks to her, I will be stuck with this medical debt as I couldn't afford the bills without the help of my insurance, and they weren't going to offer me an extension, and that when I refused multiple times she should have dropped it, and I told her to just leave, as I didn't want to look at her. I messaged Cathy and told her that I was going to quit as I couldn't stand Sally's blatant disregard for my medical needs, and that I was done. Well Cathy told me that she set up a meeting with her and John to address the issue (why this wasn't done before, I have no idea, because I complained multiple times about the medical violations against me Sally was doing.) and I told her that I will stay until the meeting, and if things weren't addressed in a proper manner, I was leaving that day and not coming back. This was on a Friday, the meeting was scheduled for Tuesday. Well, the next day when I came in, I was looking at the manager logbook, and I saw some vile and rude things written about me in there from Sally, and that was the last straw, we were super busy and Sally kept telling me to go up to the FOH while I was writing to Cathy. Sally kept saying that they needed me up there, and right before I clocked out and left, I said, and I'll never forget this because of the feeling I had when I said it, “They don't need me anywhere, I'm sick of your shit, so I am leaving.”
I am sad I had to leave that job, because I really enjoyed working there other than that one manager. I got a new job two weeks later in an industry I had never worked before, and I adore this job as well. I will have been in this new position for a year in May.
I've been back to that place twice, once when Sally wasn't working to get an order of fries, because they have really good fries, and earlier today to get my W2. Sally was there, and I went through the drive thru to get some fries after finishing up my taxes in the parking lot on my phone. She was talking trash about me where I could clearly hear her through the window. I, honestly, have only thought about her three times since I quit, the two times I went to that restaurant, and now, writing this post, but it is nice to see that I still piss her off, I hope what she did to me happens to her one day.
