My work denied my UNPAID time off for 15.31 hours so I can try to make the World Championship Team to represent the United States in Paralympic Swimming

I’m 22 years old, working to pay off my husband and I’s student loans and my husbands car. I put in my request today. I didn’t have enough PTO because they refused to let me work from home when I was sick in January. I work as a social worker for children. Two of our team members are leaving in the next 3 weeks, so I, and my other coworkers, will have at least 20 clients on our case load. They want us to see them 2-3 times a week (not possible). If I leave my clients will be neglected and my all ready overworked coworkers will be wrecked. So I told them they can either let me appeal, work virtually when I am at the meet, or I’ll put in my two weeks notice. It sucks because I love my job, but I’m going to pick trying to race…

So I told them they can either let me appeal, work virtually when I am at the meet, or I’ll put in my two weeks notice. It sucks because I love my job, but I’m going to pick trying to race in Portugal in June versus making $20.24 an hour. My supervisor emailed me saying he wants me to have a work life balance so I can try to work 20 hours in 2 days before the Thursday-Saturday meet and I told him that’s not possible. I need to be there Monday to Sunday due to COVID protocols. Wish me luck tomorrow as I will know for certain if I can compete (the meet is April 7th-9th and I waiting to see if I was offered an international classification slot)!
