Throwaway account for obvious reasons, but I really need to hear your honest feedback. I started a job just three weeks ago at a company in the US, I am a resident immigrant (“legal immigrant”) coming from England, and came here and basically signed for the job right away (I had been applying for months before my arrival).
As some of you may be familiar with, social security and green card documents take a bit to get to your house, so I signed the contract, waited for it to arrive but still did my background check and passed with flying colours thanks to having my green card number on the visa (or that's what I think)
Fast fwd I'm working for three weeks and haven't got paid although I filled the info with the accountant to confirm my status and to be able to get paid with a 1099 in the meantime while I get SSN.
Here's where it gets ugly, I ask the accountant why I haven't been paid and I hear back “do you have an actual SSN? are you legally authorized to work here?” to which I didn't reply and then the accountant replied she'd send me 1099.
Moments after I get a call from HR saying they're confused as to why the CEO is asking them if they hired and I quote ” AN ILLEGAL”, and every day since has been a nightmare.
The CEO won't respond to my messages
I haven't gotten paid
I'm still working
I was able to get my SSN via an appt and will get it this week, but they keep pushing HR and telling them I'm illegal, to which HR is pushing me to get the SSN asap.
The craziest part to me is that the CEO has not replied to ANY of my work-related emails for almost a week now. I'm thinking I will get paid and quit before they fire me, but it puts me in a tough spot being alone in this country.
Note that I emailed them clarifying once again that I am legally allowed to work and live here and that I don't need assistance, and also that the SSN situation was out of my hands, according to HR they don't believe me and think I am illegal.
Am I doing something wrong here? Did I fuck up by working without the SSN yet?
