New job is changing me from exempt to non-exempt

Hello, I am a senior who is graduating from college in a couple weeks and then starting a new corporate job in the digital payments industry (product management). I already accepted an offer to start in August post grad with an agreed upon base salary of about 88k. Just recently someone from HR called saying they are changing me from exempt to non exempt and therefore changing me to an hourly rate. This hourly rate matches my original yearly salary assuming a 35 hour work week. Why are they making this change? It is honestly very confusing and frustrating to me that I am being demoted to hourly rate after working extremely hard for a salaried position. Can anyone please explain why they might be doing this. Some of my work will be remote not sure how much yet. Also I know I am getting paid a lot of money…

Also I know I am getting paid a lot of money so I want to just take a minute to check my own privilege and acknowledge how fortunate I am. The money should end up being the same but I can’t shake the feeling I’m getting fucked over somehow.
