I (27F) got into insurance right before COVID hit and absolutely fell in love with insurance; however the first company I worked for was toxic as hell. So, I got a new job. When I was interviewing for the position, the manager said “we aren’t in the office right now. Even when we do start to go back, it won’t be until June or July and we want to keep people hybrid, so it would only be a day or two a week.
I thought great, this gives me time to get acclimated to the company and save up for a new car. I went ahead and spent over $700 on a new desk for my office, chair, Matt, decorations to make it look professional because it’s an office requirement to have your camera on.
My first day, got an email saying that they are starting phase 2; some will come in, but it’s on a voluntary basis. Both my boss and the person who is training me sent emails that put a lot of pressure on me to come back into the office as often as I can. I said that I really couldn’t do that because of a car situation and that I had accepted the position based off of going to the office a day or two a week starting in June or July.
They said that starting next week it’s mandatory to return to the office 100% of the work week.
I’m not comfortable with that and I feel like they did a bait and switch.
What can I do here?
I want to keep my job, but I don’t make enough to come into the office every day.
My car also will shit out on me because of 45- an hour commute one way.
I want to ask for a reason why this changed and if they will honor their mistake or if I have to go to the office, can I ask for more compensation?
