I get a newspaper delivered on Saturdays (yes, a physical paper, bite me) and today's paper included a letter from the route guy saying he quit, so paper routes for two papers are automatically canceled because there is no one to take his place. It's not clear from the tone if the letter is REALLY from him or from a boss – it's in the first person but it's peak NO ONE WANTS TO WORK and includes information on how to apply. I can understand not wanting to deliver papers. Unlike the fantasies of boomers, it's a job that requires a car here, it's 7 days a week, and has no security or benefits whatsoever, usually requiring people to pay their own gas, too. I wonder if this sort of thing will cause changes, or if the level of deliveries is so low they'll just decide to cancel delivery service altogether. But if this person also did the commercial deliveries to the stores in the area, which is likely, it means 2 important newspapers will be ceasing physical distribution entirely in a large region. I feel like this is a problem actually requiring a solution, somehow. Isn't this a fantastic amount of power for someone to have, at the same time that their job gets no respect or decent pay?
