Nightshift and swing shift for a $1 or 50 cents a hour more is a joke.

$1 a hour more in a blue collar job isn't a lot, but often it worked with my schedule and I enjoyed not having to deal with worthless management. The problem is now I have to make a special trip to get groceries as I can't get them after work anymore do to 24 hour groceries going away. So that's more gas money and having to deal with lines. One perk gone. The other issue is turnover leads to a experience gap between 1st and other shifts meaning the job often requires you to be a much more knowledgeable worker if you take on any role with responsibility. There's no asking a co-worker for help if at a year you're the most experienced person there. Yet management still questions why your shift didn't get as much work done as 1st shift. Try altering your sleep schedule to enjoy the weekend and you'll find out it sucks. These often pay $2 a hour more which is still only a 10% raise for being required to adapt your life to your job. You'll end up feeling like a zombie and spending more money on stimulants to keep you going.

Inflation has driven wages up, but shift premiums have lagged. They really need to triple due to increased turnover rates and the reduction in grocery store hours. If you have a role that requires more knowledge and responsibility it needs to go up even more. I've seen too many night shift leaders doing the work that day shift supervisors do+their regular work.
