I know crazy and controversial title. Now this isn't me supporting corporations either because they suck too.
This post is about a small vet clinic I work at, which I'm hoping to get out of within the next month or sooner, where we had a good system going for quite some time. The owner was really cool and nice at the beginning of my time here, but she quickly became a nightmare as time went on.
We would have people wait outside in their cars while we took care of the pet inside and had the vet talk to them over the phone. Simple and easy. Kept the very small staff safe from exposure.
But now the pandemic is “over” and we should let everyone inside and stack pets and people on top of each other with barely any staff in our small building.
We all knew the owner, who is the main vet, was going to force the place open one day, but she also told the practice manager, who is just a person she hired to say no for her so she doesn't have to feel bad, that she is willingly to slowly go back to normal for the safety and comfort of the staff. Huge lie because within a month of step 1 she said starting in April people are allowed in again and masks are stupid, but she will shoulder the burden of making everyone wear one for us.
Now possible answers to possible questions at this point.
When I started here we had around 12 people.
We are down to 4 people that work full time and 2 part time people then the owner. Everybody else left because the owner kept talking down to people, micromanaging, and not doing anything about aggressive and abusive clients. Would even continue to make people deal with the person that kept harassing them. I had a client harass me for a week straight that wouldn't stop calling and asking for me by name because “I was the favorite”. Owner did nothing to help this.
Back to current time. Owner will randomly decide they will shut down for a week because they want to go on a random vacation, spend 200k plus on race horses they don't even use, buy another car. Now they've been trying to hire people for months now but don't like the person or won't offer them a decent wage. Owner claims they don't make enough money and blame that people aren't coming in because we aren't letting people in. That statement has been false as it wasn't time for people to come in yet to get their vaccinations updated. You usually know when it is time for that around the holidays, gift pets, and spring/summer because vacation time for people.
Now I came into work today to see the owner made the irresponsible decision of overstuffed the clinic with people to the point that people were sitting in a room for an hour.
I've decided it's time to put my associates degree in general studies (focused in science) to use and leave this place to make way more and do something that is safer for me and I'm actually interested in.
What would you say I could possibly move to using my degree? I know the internet says I can do so much with it but I'm not too sure as I've kind of thought it was useless at first because my mom said I got a useless degree and how I wasted my scholarship on it and thinks I should have put myself into debt to try and become a nurse where I'm just not interested in doing that. The original goal was nursing but as time went on and the pandemic kept going the ugliness I saw just wasn't worth it to keep pursuing.
