Not allowing employees lateral movement is a great way to lose them.

I really liked the company that I was working for, but the job itself was no longer a good fit for me so I applied for a different job which was essentially a lateral move and I did have experience doing that job. After a couple weeks I get notice that they can’t move me because they need me in my current role since I’m one of the more senior members. So, I found a job with a different company. They could have kept me, if they’d just let me change and instead they lost an employee all together.
