I am on the fence about the antiwork movement (at least whatever I understand about it on reddit)
Work history:
Started hourly at Panera in 2002. I think I was making around $7.50/hr. I went from Barista to Prep to Shift Lead to Assistant Manager to Manager. That was from 2002-2008.
In 2008, took a job making $13.50/hr to change fields, essentially working as an administrative assistant. Worked into a few promotions, moved around into a few different jobs to find pay bumps, had a few seasons of working longer hours to find new opportunities.
In 2016 I moved into a corporate office, and have continued to climb in that office. At this point, I am in upper management making good money, and we have above 300 employees that we treat (what I believe to be) very fair.
I may be ignorant (which is why I’m here?), but I do feel like there are jobs, organizations and opportunities for folks to work at meaningful business with bosses and managers who actually care about folks.
On the flip side, I see terrible stories of bad bosses and managers in this thread that make me cringe real bad.
In short: I do believe we have agency to change our situations. I believe that hard work can reap positive rewards, and I think my story is a testament to that. Is the general perspective of this thread in disagreement with that statement, or it is just recognizing that the aforementioned statement is generally not accurate?
