I work in academia. Last year I got my PhD in biology and have been working as a postdoc at a state school ever since. Being hired as a postdoc was a nightmare. My mentor/boss didn't know how to properly hire a staff member rather than I student and I ended up being unpaid for almost two months while still going in to work ( less than 40 hours, but still). I used my entire savings to make it through those months of unemployment and have nothing left. Now I've been working there full time the past seven or so months and I thought things were going well. Today my advisor/boss comes up to me in lab, not even a private meeting in her office, to tell me she has run out of funds and I won't be paid this month or for last month or any month until this grant she was rewarded is processed
As far as I can tell I am still expected to work. For no pay. As a post-phd. Meanwhile today she hired two undergrads to work in the summer but I don't get a salary, me who has bills and loans and everything just as much if not more than undergrads. I am so beyond furious. I feel unappreciated, undervalued, and completely disposable. I have no savings anymore from the last time she fucked up my salary and even more responsibilities so I can't just walk away. What the actual fuck.
