Opinions about tipping in places that are counter-service only?

I keep seeing options to add a tip to the total at places with no table service. Places like donut shops and a tea house I went to. I don’t leave a tip because I thought that was only for places where they actually wait tables? Also, I live in California where they have to pay even tipped workers the full minimum wage which is now $15. I’m not trying to be cheap, but I’m also not trying to go broke. Am I an asshole for not adding a tip? I definitely do at regular restaurants with table service- I add 20%. But if I’m just getting something at a counter? I don’t feel like I should. Am I wrong?
