Boss said that if I want a promotion I have to be prepared to work more hours.

How does this make sense? I work a 40+ hour work week already. A promotion is meant to give me responsibilities that take more time, effort, and experience to learn, hence the aligned pay bump. If I wanted more money for more hours, I’d keep my easier day job and just get a side hustle. Why stress myself with a more difficult job with longer hours for a measly little pay raise? It’s not even a raise, then!

New job isn’t paying for overtime hours.

I recently started working this job with a media company that operates throughout the USA. I ended up about 30 minutes overtime on my first day. The next day I asked about their overtime policy and apparently the company “isn’t approving overtime” and the policy is that we keep track of any time we have over and we get a paid day off when we hit 8 OT hours. If we log our overtime hours into our employee portal they won’t get approved/will be sent back so we literally cannot get paid for them. I literally worked a 12 hour day last week. I’ve filed a complaint with my state’s labor board but I don’t know if it’ll go anywhere since there’s not a paper trail of the overtime policy. Is there anything else I can do?

UPDATE: new boss is upset I’m resigning and relocating to a new state. She is requesting I write a manual on every step I take to do my job in 2 days. How can I professionally tell her no?

Thank you to those who made me laugh and offered genuine hilarious takes. I see I’m not the only out here dealing with a BAD boss. Og posted here above. Once I clocked in, I decided to type up a contract and present it to her. I was ready to do so when I got handed a stack of projects and was told to pitch in. I politely refused and went back to wrapping everything up. I was then out of the office dealing with IT issues for our program beta testing when I looked up and saw my boss staring at me through the office glass. I excused myself and went into the hallway. She was pissed and asked to talk with me. I rescheduled with IT and left for her office. She said she went through my drive and found my work and needed me to walk her…

Employer says I can’t use my phone at the time clock to set a timer

I stuggle to remember when I clocked out for lunch and was constantly coming back like a few minutes late. They never confronted me personally about it, but we had meetings about it. So I decided to start pulling my phone out and setting a timer when for 29 minutes for when I need to head back. Another associate was doing the same and when I was going to lunch, they were coming back from lunch and mentioned they were just wrote up for setting a timer on their phone. Is there any excuse I can give them or say to tell them to shove it up their ass, because I either com back from lunch late or I set a timer. By the time I get to the breakroom, I've already forgot to set one.

Anti-raise culture

My company makes it near impossible to engage in salary related discussions. As my previous request to have a conversation about comp was ignored, I scheduled additional time with the decision makers. The company has seen a ton of turnover in the last year and I have up until this point been applauded for my contributions, celebrated for my effort, reassured that things would get better in time. That all changed today when I asked for money. The conversation started off great, as the team shared a wide range of compliments towards my work. Upon introducing the idea that these contributions respectfully justify a salary increase, the narrative shifted. I was then told in reality my contributions were actually, “fine effort” but flawed, ultimately cheapening my own perspective on the nature of my work and worth to the organization.

Can anyone here actually afford to buy a home anymore???

I’m looking at home prices in my area and nothing is lower than 400k. A decade ago homes were in the 200s and 300s. Now a crappy home that needs major repairs is in the upper 200s and new homes being built at the bare minimum are in the lower 400s. If you get lucky you’ll find a small house bare bones in the 300s. I know this doesn’t compare to you guys in HCOL areas but I’m feeling sick looking at these prices. I don’t earn that much and its so hard to get a good paying job. My cousin earns around 200k and I’m starting to think she is one of the lucky ones. Those people will be able to afford one of these homes. She goes on expensive vacations every month and has a hefty investment account. She is looking for a home and her husband earns…

“Employers have had enough and are starting to cut salary offers by as much as 47%”

link for reference: https://fortune.com/2023/08/29/salaries-raises-new-hires-declining/ This article took me by surprise… if it is true, working class people should definitely be alarmed. Housing, childcare, medical care, even food are still wholly unaffordable but its okay for businesses to cut wages because its just the job market “cooling” and “normalizing”. There's nothing normal about life for the working class right now and this article is all just buzzword capitalist economics BS to make you think what's happening is some kind of self-regulating natural phenomenon. And of course the author had to blame inflation on high wages right at the end. Disgusting. Please keep fighting any way you can for higher wages and against misinformation blaming workers for the state of this country.

My job is trying to charge employees as a collective for mistakes?

Hello everyone just a little background about my position to give context. I am a dispatcher at a trucking company I have been working here for almost going on a year now. Routinely we get emails from our boss threatening myself and fellow dispatchers that if we mistakes we will financially pay for our mistakes. Meaning our boss will take money out of our checks if we make a mistake even as a collective… This to me is so wrong just wondering if anyone can give advice on what I can do as I’m lost. My job does pay me pretty well however dealing with this stress of these threats being put on me I don’t feel like the pay is worth what we deal with and are threatened about. I don’t make six figures or anything but the pay is decent but I’m not sure if I should report…
