I work in a restaurant and never take breaks, I could work 2 hours – 9 hours without a single break. Yesterday my boss tried to make me take a one hour (obviously unpaid) break so that I could stay one hour later past my 8 hours. I hate work. I had plans after my 8 hour shift with my family who’s visiting from out of town whom I haven’t seen in over a year and when I said that, the response I got was “you should always plan to work an 8 hour shift and shouldn’t schedule anything before that”. Funny. Because that would be 9 hours. Love it
Is my Supervisor getting the in the way?
I work for this company in NY that provides buildings with a front desk concierge. When I started, I asked to be a “Floater”. This essentially means that I cover anyone that calls out. I wanted something low hours with an extremely flexible schedule. I had just quit my full time job due to burn out and I needed to take a mental break but also still work. Anyway, Im here for a month and I've done multiple buildings, my burnout is basically gone and im running low on money. So I ask my manager (the one that hired me) if he can get me a part/full time position. He says he'll look for something. Weeks go by and I get no response. I go on indeed and find that my company is looking for people for a part time position. It's perfect because it's only three days a week…
So I went into another store in the chain I work at to ask for a transfer to get away from an insufferable store manager and her pet POS associate to be face to face with the regional manager to my surprise. He asks the reasons for my transfer and I lie and say it's because of distance and “its sssoooo much closer” he asks what store I'm coming from and immediately sees through my facade and asks the REAL reasons for transfer. To which my brain went full autopilot and tells of their civil rights abuses, changing of schedules with 12 hours notice and not so much as a courtesy call/text, hippa violations, cursing at associates in front of customers, throwing away dr notes to give non medical absences ect ect.. apparently that was the last thing they needed as there have been many complaints about these two people…
My new boss was hired this time last year. While he is a generally chill person he is the type to avoid resolving things firsthand and wait for the solution to appear, while in the meantime me and another high performing worker suffers. Im second to him in leadership, and for a while I had a good thing going. I didnt ever want to be the general manager, but in the interim time of us waiting for another manager to be hired, me and my team were pretty peaceful. I was able to get everyone’s ideal schedules, solid KPI results, literally no more drama because we got rid of the bad eggs, main negative was that I was just a little tired and definitely worked OT. But nothing I hadnt seen or dealt with before. This guy comes along and wipes everything clean, slowly takes away all of my responsibilities…
Suprise suprise
Sometimes bullets just dodge themselves
Last night we arrived at an airport in the Midwest. Nearby, while waiting for an Uber, a limo-bus driver in uniform and working, tripped and really gashed his head open. He lost consciousness for a few seconds and was bleeding badly. We ran over to help, got him a cushion for his head, and the cleanest compress we could apply to the gash. He was certain to need 20-40 stitches. After calling an ambulance and airport dispatch, I called his supervisor to get them to help. He definitely needed to go to the hospital and needed support. Their response? “We’ll send someone over right away to get his keys so we can get the van.” Seriously. That’s it. I was freeking furious, and let loose. What in the F kind of place do we live where an on-the-job employee is bleeding in the street, waiting for an ambulance, and all…
“Temporary Financial Difficulties”
My small company is currently going through a rough financial patch. I work in purchasing so I've been aware of it for a while but I'm not high up enough to have been privy to the extent of it. 3 weeks ago I was advised to cut down spending to the minimum required emergency purchases only. This week I was told no more spending unless approved by the CEO… Apparently we've secured funding/investments but the process will take a few months before it hits our bank accounts. In the meantime, we as a company, have next to no cash flow. Their solution? Hiring freeze, no spending.. the obvious. The big one: ask employees to take a reduced work week on a voluntary basis. Example, go from 5 to 3 or 4 days and get paid for only the days you work. Most of us cannot afford it, I pretty much…
scheduling outside of availability
My current employer has always seemed to do right by me, as far as hours and scheduling goes, but because of the holidays these past few weeks have been screwy. I am part time and work the same 4 days every week (Sun-Wed). I have other responsibilities which prevent me from working the other days. Responsibilities, you know, like life. Because of the July 4th holiday landing on a Monday, the shop was open the prior Friday (typically Sun-Thurs), but closed the Sunday for the holiday; some people were asked to work a few hours Monday(Holiday) to help finish up, and then resume regular shifts on Tuesday. I then requested Wednesday off (3 weeks prior), and that would end my week. So, Sun-holiday, Mon-extra hours, Tues-Normal, Wed-PTO The week prior I worked my normal hours, which weren't affected at all. I was also asked to help on Monday(holiday) since I…
Can they lower my pay?
My manager told me that they’re going to eventually lower my pay. I signed an offer letter for this position that included how much I would be getting paid an hour. Can they legally lower my pay? What can I do?
