My younger sister (14) is looking for a summer job. What places would y'all recommend that would treat her decently and pay okay? I also want to help her learn how to stand up for her worker's rights, but I'm kind of a pushover and don't think I'd be the best person to help her do that, so a link or two would be helpful. I live in the Midwest, around Chicago, if that helps. Any advice is appreciated, thanks! (Mods, feel free to take this down if it doesn't fit the sub)
And being that they’re in charge of just one or a few stores, in my experience, it’s guaranteed that they’re going to micromanage and be more hands on, rather than stay at home and count their money. For 11 years, i worked at a local bar/restaurant, until the owner sold it. She was an old desert hippy, very neurotic, and she took every opportunity to proudly announce or display her allegiance to capitalism. She opened the place in 1978, and older people would frequently dine there who remembered partying with her back when she was fun. I heard many stories about her keeping coke in her office desk for servers and cooks to enjoy whenever they wanted (not that i necessarily yearned for those days). Then, as she got older and her employees remained in their 20’s, she presumably found less and less ways to relate to them. She got…
I need my bosses approval to apply for an internal lateral move. What's it called if they deny it. The denial reason may be because staffing is short and would leave a vacancy at my current venue.
For the sake some some anonymity my store lead told me I had to reimburse the company for a customer not fully paying a tab. I live in Texas. They came through the drive through, I ran their cars, handed them them the drinks, the register completed the order and she left. A couple seconds later the register told me is was partial payment . For context, this register has been giving us issues for months and has been ignore by company owner. Store lead says it’s my job to cover it so I paid. Later my boyfriend told me this was highly illegal unless I had a consent form previously signed with the company. All I ever signed was my W2 and pre-employment form. I’m Not sure it said anything about that. For more context we get our tips every two weeks before payday. Last payday I didn’t get…
A table of mine walked out without paying, they were seated on our outdoor patio. I informed my manager and her response was “You need to keep a better eye on your tables” I told her I had only just dropped the check off and I felt that it was unfair of her to speak as if it was my fault she responded by yelling throughout the kitchen saying “Right, I forgot that nothing is ever your fault” I was shook up as I didn’t expect this type of response so I exited the kitchen and continued to care for my other tables without a word to her. I walked back into the kitchen a couple minutes later to which she told me she only took half of the bill off and expected me to pay the rest I asked her if she could explain to me exactly how I…
Right out of college I got a contracting position. I remember being super excited about having a foot in the door. After about 6 months I got my first salaried position in the company for a different team. It was an entry level position but the culture made it “seem” like you had the capability of moving up. My first clue something wasn’t right was 2 weeks later at the end of my shift – my manager and the director pulled me into an office. I was freaking out, but now I believe the whole thing was for intimidation. Aparently I got offered more money for the position than I should have, and they wanted to ‘encourage’ me not to share my salary with other employees, and that I wouldn’t receive raises (or they would be minuscule) for the first couple years until all the other salaried entry level employees…
