Okay so sorry if my thoughts aren't so coherent but I just always think like we have so much technology now a days that could replace tons and tons of jobs. Literally robots that could replace whole work forces. But because we won't settle on some form of Universal Basic Income or re-allocate the funds from the robots “wages” into higher paid positions for the humans that will work we're stuck in this endless cycle of “the machines will take our jobs” Example: at a store if you have 4 self checkout machines and only 1 cashier running them all, instead of allocating the wages of those 3 other cashier's wages into your profit margins, why not just increase the pay of the cashier? (Ideally by 3x since now they're doing the work of 3 additional people) We're literally being held back from a future of leisure and/or a future…

Hey folks, just looking for advice. I work 8:30am – 5pm Monday to Friday but I'm having issues with my times and want to know where I stand. Basically because of the big C, I can't drive yet. I have my driving test booked now but I had to wait an extra 2 years. This means I have to rely on public transport. When I get the train in, my average clock-in time is 8:28am. On the odd occasion I clock in at 8:31am (public transport is pretty unreliable at times) but I never clock out before about 5:05pm anyway so I make up for that one min. My manager has been berating me telling me that my clock-in time is unacceptable and that I am expected to be there at least 5-10 mins early so that I am at my desk and ready to start work for 8:30. This…
I joined an open-source team a year ago to develop an extremely complicated signal processing algorithm. Ended up doing everything myself, with limited guidance from one of its admins, call him Tom. Tom followed my work closely for most part, and expressed much appreciation for it. Few others from this 10-person team chipped anything beyond a few comments. Recently I coauthored a paper, per Tom's invitation, showcasing the algorithm. My role was only to review, but their failure to get “state of the art” in a machine learning task required my intervention (that I lacked time for), which pushed it several points past. Nothing hinted something's wrong up to that point, but I did feel the others didn't really treat me as an equal part of the team. Tom denied any such thing, until I pushed to be promoted to admin, when he admitted he thinks I “lack technical competence”.…
