I don’t have a memory of this man not at work, being at work or around a desk. The memories I have are the smell of his musk and cigarettes in his office. The stain of that ugly green in his office. The few times I saw him was while at his house where he’d come home, the pots would clang he’d fix something to eat and go to bed. There’s been an occasion where some times he’d pull into his garage and the vehicle would be running with the lights on. We’d go there and find him asleep inside. To many he was the king he had a central AC system, internet, and his boys, my cousins had gaming systems that just came out. In a third world country these things were luxurious. He had a maid to clean, there was a young girl around all the time and…
So I’m an automotive technician (was) and I got this really amazing offer to go work for the state, better hours, better pay. I’m super excited. I love my (old?) job. I absolutely do. I love getting to work on cars that ran like shit and making them run like out the factory. I loved all my co workers, they were nothing but the best. When I put in my two weeks last week, I thought I was gonna get shitted on, hours cut, bridges burned but it was exactly the opposite. Co workers have been buying me lunch left and right, a lot of well received comments and most importantly the owner and manager both told me that if It doesn’t work out, I can always call and get my old job back.
Sweep the floors for a while
I work at goodwill as a cashier. There was a really chatty older couple at my register today. Very friendly and joking throughout their transaction. I rang their total up and told them it would be $78 dollars. He playfully patted his pockets and said “Uh oh, I might have to sweep the floors for an hour or two!” His wife and I laughed. I then told him that it’d be more like the rest of the day, because they pay us $11 an hour. Their whole demeanor changed almost immediately. His wife said something along the lines of, “Oh honey, how do you make it?” I laughed it off and told her I was lucky that I had family to stay with. They proceeded to complain about the price they just paid for the clothes they just bought, which were donated freely to goodwill. (5.29 per shirt, 6.99 per…
I am a data scientist at a large corporation. As of last year, I report directly into the C-suite. To say that I am horrified by the complete shitshow that is executive leadership is an understatement. Our Chief Data Officer literally doesn't know ANYTHING about the fundamentals of data science, data architecture, data engineering, etc. He got the role because he's really good at using corporate buzzwords like “synergistic insights” and “leveraging cross-functional collaboration.” It's widely known that he's grossly unqualified for his role, yet his base pay is more than the combined pay of everyone on my team. Another chief I work regularly with, has on more than one occasion literally said she thinks laws are annoying and that the company should just do whatever will make them the most money even if it risks legal trouble. You know, because who needs those pesky laws that are meant to…
Comment is good advice
Hoarding happiness
I worked in a cherry processing plant during the summer, and a few people wanted to know the “experience,” so I decided to write it down. The shift was 7am to 5pm got paid for 9 because of breaks, which were more like try not to pass out and drink water because if you did that while the line was on everybody suffered, ergo everybody got angry at you. You would start washing your hands with boiling water and soap, because you're handling food products, and then you would put on these cheap as fuck latex gloves that won't fit on your bare hands doesn't sound too bad right but your doing cardio from hell, by the second day my hands were bleeding all they had was a looted out first aid kit and you had to bandage every single one couldn't use your own though had to be these…
Boss sent me to Katy eith no disclosure
Gas station dude again. Havent landed a remote data entry job to quit yet so stuck here till then. Either way, boss asked if I could cover a shift at another circle k. Told him I would cause it pays more to do so. He neglected to tell me its in fucking Katy of all places. I live in fucking Cypress. No word about that. Is this legal? It seems it, just shitty, but wanna make sure.
Manager Help
I've followed this sub for a while and have even posted here. I'm a manager and try my best not to be an asshole. Judging from the fact that my employees like me (we go out, talk about our personal lives, talk outside work etc), I'd say they like me. Now I have this one worker who keeps telling me last minute he can't work. He has another job. It's clear that the job I'm a manager at isn't his priority which is fine with me, but he keeps messaging me on Sundays his new availability. His availability is down to three days now and he only tells me this mere hours before the beginning of one of the most hectic work weeks. I'm struggling to honestly see a reason to keep him as an employee, but I want to make sure I'm not over reacting here.
I’m not scared of people, I’m scared of my reaction and I’ve always been told to ignore things since my childhood and that has taken a toll on me into adulthood, I’ve always been scared to say something back because if it causes conflict I might get fired. This goes for co-workers also.
