Hanlon’s Razor of Business – Canadian Edition

“Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity” Forget evil abusive bastards and distopian megacorporations (Hi Jeff!), I want to talk about most small and medium enterprise (SME) you will work for, work with or hear about. And as someone whose day-to-day job is to manage their anguish, their frustrations, their fuck-up and their lack of vision, I can say that most of them are not in bad faith. They're just profondly inept, dangerously mismanaged and blissfully forgetful. You've all seen those: a good business, well established and lucrative, but without any significant growth and a high turnover. The owners work too much, as do their employees. The employees are not very well paid and their salary is stagnant. There is no real long term strategy to pass-on the business to the next generations or employees. Actually, there's no real long term strategy at all. They try…

My heart has always been antiwork even if I didn’t know of the community.

I've had 7 jobs over the last 20+ years and the only 2 stories I can think to share. Both happen in big box retail. I had a manager tell me, that in my file it said I was a good worker but not to confront me on anything because my work will come to a screeching halt lol. And the only time I've had a manager ever say something crazy to me, was when I got a call that my sister was in the hospital and she could die and/or lose her baby, I told the manager I why leaving and he told me to stay because there was nothing I could do at the hospital to help. I just walked out and nothing was ever said about it again. I've always just kept the idea in my head that I don't deserve to be treated like crap and…

We have pointless mandatory meetings every month at my job.

*Unless the manager in charge has something better to do, then it is cancelled- often last minute and with trickle-down notices to supervisors expected to further forward texts. I work nights, these meetings are at 1:30 in the afternoon. They often last like 20 minutes. I often skip and do a make-up meeting at the end of my next shift because… why would I want to wake up in the middle of my sleep schedule to go and be told a bunch of information I have heard every month for the last 7 and a half years? Today I was informed that the only make-up meeting would be at 1:30 the following day, and anyone who doesn't attend will have all their shifts pulled. So I set an alarm, wake up, drive 20 miles round trip for a meeting that lasts 24 minutes. Which, given current gas prices and my…

Requiring lunches immediately after clocking in l.

We recently got a new manager, and she’s crazy. She isn’t helpful and just complains how bad everyone is doing. In the past, front line employees would almost always go to lunch between 3-4 hours into their 8 hour shifts. This new manager is requiring everyone to within the first 2 hours. (15 minutes between people starting their lunches). I’ve looked and apparently it’s legal?

Should I tell my employer that I do not want to give up my free time anymore?

So, little bit of info: I recently switched jobs, thinking it would make me happier. I soon found out that it didn't. Shortly after that I found Antiwork, talked to lots of people and my whole vision towards “Going the extra mile” and “Always improve yourself so you can do more” changed. I do my job properly, but I was hired when I still had the intention of taking on extra courses and maybe even get an education for the field. Normally I would tell anyone to not give up their free time for an employer who will replace them in a heartbeat. But I am a bit torn because I did promise them that I would. I want to sell my labor for the correct value and duration. Some advice or stories of people who have been in this situation would help. Thanks

Job just sent out a revised handbook that needs to be signed. Can someone read it over and highlight some red flags?

Unless that’s illegal of course. But I would like to make sure I’m still working for a great company.

Family death, job is asking for an obituary

So I work in Las Vegas in a startup manufacturing plant. My unofficial partner had his sister die suddenly and tragically from a blood clot brought on by a drug overdose a few weeks ago (she was 36 and clean for a year and a half). So I flew out to the east coast with him to support him and be there through the process. I just found out that my job now wants an obituary for my bereavement time off(they are mega understaffed and quite frankly an abusive workplace). My question is this, can they request this sort of documention? I am not mentioned in the obituary at all but I am very close to the family (I am a pallbearer). Do I have to provide any additional documention to prove that I attended since I am not in the obituary? Just trying to cover my ass here.
