Is it normal to not get breaks where you work?

So I just moved to Virginia, I worked at a Starbucks for a few months and quit to go to culinary school. I started working in a restaurant with a classmate just for the experience and while it wasnt the worst thing ever, we didnt get breaks. My first night I worked over 8 hours with no break and everytime I went to sit while it was slow, I was given something to do that wasnt technically in my station. I think im a pretty hard worker in general but I have a really bad back and just needed to get off my feet every few hours. I have no real interest in working in a restaurant again because of this and the fact that it's really not my cup of tea (I'm more of a baker than a cook, to be honest). The biggest question for me was, “Is…

Early struggles before work even begins

Hey everyone. I've never posted here but wanted to crowdsource some thoughts about my situation. I was scheduled to start work at a new position this week, but recently discovered a lot of black mold in my home. Basically on the floor, on the walls, and the furniture in our bedroom. This was quite alarming as we have a 4 month old baby who sleeps in a cot in our bedroom with us. We were pretty convinced that this was a structural problem and immediately began trying to organize what we needed to do, whether that being moving out, moving somewhere temporarily, or maybe nothing but some professional cleaning, along with talkong to the doctor about any possible concerns for our baby. Of course, theres not much we can decide firmly on until an inspector comes, which was only possible this morning (Monday). To compound things, we recently found out…

Unemployed and Desperate

Last October I spoke to a staffing agency to transfer from my then job, to a much better one, I was supposed to start the new job at the end of October, but it was pushed back to the end of November. I was laid off November after requesting a leave of absence to take care of my fiancé who had miscarried, naturally, I was promptly fired. I never got the new job, because they decided that I no longer already had the position and instead I needed to interview again internally with the company, I interviewed, and didn’t get the position. I’m offered a different position by the same company. I go through their fingerprints and background checks, but they tell me I have to wait until January to start. January comes around, I have to wait until February. 4 days before my role starts (it was supposed to…

Should I sue my employer?

I've been working at a hospital as a foreign patient consultant for 7 months now. (started as a fresh graduate) First of all, they never gave me a contract when I started, saying its not necessary. My working hours are 8am to 6pm, 6 days a week. But as my job requires to answer any questions my patiens have I'm on my phone 24/7. I always have to wait until the operations are over so I'm also overworking most of the week. (This month only I worked 300 hours) They would usually let me come a bit late the days after I worked overtime, but now as we made a deal that theyre gonna pay for my overwork they want me to work full time. Sometimes I spent 20 hours a day at the clinic and I sleep in one of the empty operation rooms then start working in the morning…

I hate what work has made me

Disclaimer: I am not fishing for sympathy or praise, in fact I despise praise for my line of work. Been a frontline worker in Healthcare throughout the whole pandemic. I cover for people at last minute, I give up my weekends, I miss seeing my family, I skip breaks, I stay late, I am owed endless hours that I will not get back and I am forever short of staff. All of this and I feel guilty for being off work having injured my knee and I can't walk properly. Why the guilt? Why do I feel torn between standing up for myself and letting my body rest or sucking it up and limping around work for my ungrateful seniors? They don't remember all the times I came in last minute to help but maybe they will remember this? Why do I think like this? ! Why has work made…

really well explained in this documentary. I too quit my IT job in 2021 to join another company which offered 50% more pay and almost half the responsibility I had earlier. Win-win for me.

Imagine being able to get a decent job without experience.

I have two degrees, a bachelor's degree in a scientific field from a top 20 University (Clemson) and an Associate's degree in computer science. I also served in the military (U.S. Marine Corps). I've never worked a job that a 16-year old couldn't get (except the Marine Corps. You can join at 17 with parental consent). The only job experience I have is in restaurants and retail, because that's where I worked through highschool and college due to the fact that they were the only businesses who would hire me. Every “entry-level position” I've tried to apply for requires five years of experience in the field. I've never made more than $12 dollars per hour and have never been offered full-time work. I'm also a straight and white male, so figure that one out. I'd love to get some of that “privilege” every tells me I'm supposed to have. I…

Help about internal vs external job change

Hi, I'm currently working for a big tech company in France, and I have an internal job change planned for April 1st. However I was also prospecting for other jobs in parallel and got an offer that i'm seriously considering. Nothing wrong with my future position either. If i resign now I'll probably be blacklisted in my current company. Also I'll have to endure the legal 3 months (yes it's 3 months in France for engineers) before I leave. The company is big enough so that HR and managers are dehumanized AF. The engineers are also in high demand in the area. Did you find yourself in a similar position ? What would you do : use the job offer as leverage ? but I haven't started my new position, so it's not the best timing go full scorched earth and resign. these people aren't my friends. refuse the offer,…
