A few years ago I worked in a shop. We had always been given cash bonuses at Christmas, often $500 or so. The year in question they’d made a huge profit increase, they kept saying they were so impressed with our work and hoped we would be working even harder next year (slap in the face as we had been overworked already). They chose this year to scrap the cash bonus and they gave us shares in the business. We weren’t allowed to sell these shares for a number of years and we lost them all together if we quit within 2 years. They were valued at about $200, they said having even more interest in the company will get us working harder. Obviously it sounds nice to imagine landlords getting theirs, but there’s a reason no one’s suggesting it and I want to know why. What would happen if that were to occur? What would the outcomes of that sort of collective effort be?

8 years ago was a decent time. You could either be poor enough to get food stamps to feed your family for a month making minimum wage which would pay the rent plus utilities or if you took a little higher paying job you didn't qualify for food stamps or medicaid so it would be impossible to live. Made it way easier to find any job and not worry. Now I am making 20 an hour plus commission which equates to like 25 an hour and I am in a worse spot. Foodstamps and Medicare do not adjust with inflation properly and so I'm paying 300 a month for insurance for myself and about 800 a month to feed my wife and 3 kids as well. We don't buy expensive foods. We have steak 1 or 2 nights a week but cheap steak and the rest is generic big frozen…
