I have a dumb question…

Could we (the people) organize a national labor strike to demand higher minimum wages? Even if it lasted one day. Just one day with absolutely no work done (except medical etc) and not a single dollar put back into the economy, the effects would be so insane that I feel like even just the fear of it actually happening would work.

Wages are rising and employers are squirming

Wanted to share this trend I’m seeing in Canada quickly in 2022. My company AIG is pulling out new stops (in US too) to recruit and they are desperate. They relied for decades on people begging to work here and them holding all the cards. Now, my department barely sees applications coming in, until they raise the wage and/or amend the employment agreement to the applicant’s demands. I can’t say I’m not enjoying this! We are also accepting, for the 1st time, applications without experience or degrees. My husband works in real estate and the same goes for his industry. He was complaining last night his team is showing him the job offers they are getting and demanding more $ now. He is over a barrel and desperate to keep them. But he still has the old mentality of ‘why can’t they just appreciate what they have’ and ‘I paid…

Is the local/national/global population a factor in the attitudes of everyday employers towards hiring people/paying living wages?

This is just a thought I have had and may contain some conspiracy that we can all debate. We all like to compare todays job market to the market of the past. One major thing that has consistently changed over time and affects supply and demand for work is the population, or that makes sense to me at the very least. Jobs back then were seemingly easier to obtain and granted much more livable wages. I can see this happening in a time where there are less people and more jobs. Now we have more people and while we still have plenty of jobs available – the livable wage portion is lacking because in some instances the payroll pie in served in much thinner slices. Shouldn’t it also be that since there are more people, more money is being made thus giving employers a larger payroll pie to serve? I’m…

Had anyone left an esteemed position? I’d love to talk a bit.

After suffering over the past year as an engineer in construction, I realise I need to leave. I'll spare the details here — if you're interested, look at the posts on my profile please. It would be great to talk to someone who has been in a similar situation. Please PM me if you're willing to share or give advice.

All mouth and no trousers

Not that I don't appreciate reading “fake stories” talked about all the time in this community by karma farmers, they give us some entertainment value, but when are we going to take actions that produce some result? I'm having serious doubts that any of this will lead to any change, at all. And I'm definitely not alone feeling this. Worried that this community will collapse like everything else in society!

Employees who quit via email and text

As a small business owner, it is frustrating when employees quit with no notice and via text or email. Hired an office manager (26) in September. I trained her on our procedures, how to enroll kids in classes, schedule make ups, birthday parties, etc…. In December she asked me about increasing her pay. She was doing a wonderful job, very reliable, has only called out sick once in three and a half months. I increased her pay rate, and even put her on salary, since we would be open less over the holiday break. Also, now that she was salary, that gave her P.T.O. In January she missed, or called out of work 8 times. On January 24th she put in 2 weeks notice since her family was having issues, Mother admitted to hospital, Father in a psych ward, and had to take care of people in the evenings. I…
