“He came here with nothing”
My grandfather was an immigrant and lived the American Dream. But, he was an a**hole to everyone. He was abusive and valued work over everything else. My father took his work ethic but not his abusive behavior and always acted like working was an amazing thing to do. He always brought up my grandfather because he came here with nothing and worked hard. But, I never shared that mentality of working myself to the bone. “He didn't have two cents to rub together” my dad used always say. Now he doesn't have two family members that want to see him. He has a handful of children and only one talks to him. He never cared about my grandmother until she was going to die. Now, he is alone because he valued money over everything else. He had money but it is running out. He gave the illusion that he was…
Got demoted on my day off.
Yesterday my boss called me to talk about the night before. I had a rough shift, the first one since I started working and it got me demoted. I worked so hard these last 6 months just for him to reduce my pay over one bad night. I don't care about being a manager, that's less responsibility for me and more on them. I'm more upset over the pay reduction. My boss also tried wording things in a way that sounded like he was trying to get me to demote myself or even resign. When he realized that wasn't going to happen he grew the balls to tell me what the phone call was actually about. He also tried making a joke like “oh you won't get to wear your shirt and tie anymore”. Motherfucker no one wants to wear these shirts and ties in a kitchen to begin with,…
Wtf is the point of salary?
All my life I had assumed salary workers had “made it”. That was what young adults had to look forward to, the big bucks. But, is it really just salary hopping to something better until you retire? What protections are there other than not getting reduced pay if sent home for the day. They can make you work 14 hour shifts with no increase in pay, add on days previously not agreed upon, break what seem like common sense limitations. I know the obvious ones like sick and vacation, but is that really it? The difference of three weeks or so paid vs unpaid? If this is the best you're going to get, what's the point? My husband works six days a week, is gone for 12 hours a day, and now they want one person working Saturdays for the entire 14 hour shift by themselves, instead of the manager…
One of the nurses at my work has not met standards and the company was planning on firing her. She decided to turn in a resignation effective immediately to save face. Now some of the hire ups want to report her to the nursing board for “patient abandonment” because she didn't work a notice period. This is NOT grounds for patient abandonment and besides, why should she work a 2 week notice if they wanted to fire her?
So for years I worked for a company in the same department, working my way up the ladder, thought I was genuinely beloved in the group and thought we shared that buzz word of “work family” as contrived as that was… For years things were great between me and my boss and we never had issues. I was golden boy and nothing ever really got too bad…. UNTIL…. I was offered a promotion, not a huge pay increase but at least it was SOMETHING… Anyway, the job responsibilities started off simple enough then progressively evolved into something I was not experienced with at all and the workload became more than I could bear… I took my concerns to my boss and they said I knew what I signed on for when I took the new job and that I couldnt go back to my old role as it had since…
So I work at a very well known pizza chain as a driver, and the last few days my manager has been on absolute edge preparing for Superbowl Sunday, since it's the busiest delivery day of the year. Yesterday he started going off on a coworker for taking 5 min away from his prep work to talk to me and use the restroom, shit like “WHEN WERE OUT OF FOOD THIS WEEKEND BECAUSE YOU DIDNT FUCKING PREP ENOUGH, DONT CRY TO ME”. I later asked the coworker why he lets him talk to him like that. He said that by this weekend he would likely be so on edge he'll be throwing pans around the kitchen at people. Is it weird that I am very much looking forward to this behavior? Delivery driver jobs are a dime a dozen in my town and I don't need them as much as…
