I just started this job I’m November, making 12.25(min wage is 10) so I’m making shit. This place is a Gourmet Market in Sarasota FL, I was unlawfully fired for 1. Hear say- coworkers who didn’t like me because I’m 18 (young) told the director I called them old bitches. (This store caters to the elite and elderly) I never called them any names but I was constantly berated by them. 2. A girl in my school who I became friends w while working there she is 16, I’m 18, we joked around a lot about being lovers and her calling me mommy but we both are in relationships. We didn’t do this openly in front of other workers, but apparently they said I made sexual comments to her… she denied ever feeling uncomfortable etc. 3. I have an only fans. Yep. The main reason they said was “I sell…

I went to a group interview, I filled out all the paperwork, accepting I might have hearing loss, diseases from working with meat. I was sent there by job provider which was 2 bus (40 mins) + a 30 min walk there (max is 1hr 30). I asked to go to the bathroom, she said you need an escort. Before i entered the building a couple of guys asked you hear for a piss test or an interview. I waited a copy mins because I was denied to go to the bathroom since no-one there to hold my hand. I said I'm going to the bathroom and just walked up and left. My job provider asked if I left on amicable terms… I said yes
This is why
My lieutenant told me I should've notified him first before I gave my 2 weeks instead of finding out from HR. Hey LT, I did that because I just don't give a fuck anymore.
This happened in late summer probably 2 to 3 weeks before August – I had kept my old boss up to date on medical diagnosis for at least 6 months in preparation for an inevitable thyroid removal surgery and when the time came my thyroid scans came back so badly that they notified me that day (Monday) and scheduled me for emergency surgery (on Thursday) I told my old boss that I wouldn't be able to come in after my surgery as I'm not allowed to move out of bed for 2 weeks. Keep in mind there's about 18 to 20 employees when there's only 14 shifts a week so it's not a inconvenience that I won't be there and she knew I was leaving 2 weeks later anyway as schools started in August in a different state (she was fine with it) . She told me that if I…
I sent in my resignation letter today for a job I was working as a spa receptionist after less than 2 months. I was bringing home $1000 monthly and there was no room for more hours, or for less hours so I could find a way to, yannow, feed myself and pay bills and shit. It seemed really easy at first, but I realized the week I got hired, so did the other two girls I share the schedule with. I asked my manager during my interview why the spot was open and he told me the girl (read: THREE GIRLS) he had fired was apparently “lazy and always on her phone.” Idk why I even believed that shit. He also said that as long as you make an effort, they’ll see it and keep you on schedule. This place is owned by a husband and wife who also own…
A couple years ago Westjet had their own employees in Calgary providing ground handling to load planes, push planes etc, they had voted to unionize to Westjet outsourced to a company called Airport Terminal Services one of the larger ground handling companies in US/Canada. The Airport Terminal Services workers ended up unionizing and the union and company have been in negotiations, but appears it's starting to get heated and union may issue a 72 hour strike notice if an agreement is not agreed on. While the workers don't work for Westjet a strike would potentially delays Westjet flights in/out of Calgary. The 2 sides are still talking so the 72 hour strike notice has not yet been issued. (also a chance if a strike did occur, the federal government could issue back to work legislation, they have done this in the past with Canada Post, Air Canada and other federally…
Former Boss Retaliation
I quit my job of 5 years in October of last year due to extreme burnout. My boss was emotionally and mentally abusive as well verbally on a few occasions (in fact, one time they threw a pair of scissors in my general direction but could never be sure they meant to be hurling them at me) and I’d just had enough. As miserable as I was in general, things were amiable when I left and I offered to give them as much notice as they needed since I was the sole employee and responsible for the day-to-day of the business. They asked me to finish out the year and I agreed, specifically because I wanted to leave on good terms and avoid them badmouthing me to colleagues in our industry as I had decided to open my own business across the country. They were surprised but didn’t try to…
I needed a job to get through college and happen to be really into animals, so I got a job at PetSmart as a “petcare associate”. My job is to care for all the live animals in store as well as sell them and answer customer questions. I can't even begin to cover the level of neglect and pain this company inflicts on animals, as well as how shitty they treat their associates. All of this while acting like they're the good guys. I'm only going to talk about the working conditions in this post but I promise you, they are horrible evil people. First off all, 12 dollars an hour. I get asked questions every single day that are veterinarian levels of complexity. Diagnosing and offering potential fixes in everything from dogs, leopard geckos, fish, chinchillas, you name it. Not only am I expected to be able to answer…
Capitalism has infiltrated Unions
I'm a plumber (non-union) and I've been looking into the union I would join and I don't like what I see. It's a nation wide union and the president has a net worth of ~20 million even though his salary is only 400k/year (trading favors?). Are today's unions too weak and corrupt to be useful? Is this just the case with trade unions? Note: I don't want this to come off as anti-union in any way. I think that collective bargaining is essential for workers rights, and we definitely need to democratize the economy.
