Hello, this is my first time making a post here, but I've been a long time “lurker”, I've been working part time at McDonald's, the pay is as expected, though I don't mind the job itself even though it's very hard for me as I'm small and not very strong physically but lately, I want to quit, because I'm scared. Every day something dangerous happens, two customers fighting today, a guy with a knife the next, someone mildly attacking a member of the staff, it always narrowly escapes me but until when? There are teens that hate me because the rules says I'm not allowed to let them vape so I report them. They literally growl at me when they pass by me (which I used to find funny) but then one of them straight up threaten to stab me today. I think they're not serious, I mean they're just…
A story I thought you all would enjoy
This all happened a few years ago and things have only gotten worse. I got hired to manage a glass shop. I get on site and find the place in complete disarray. I find out we lost money the past 6 quarters. I see a huge stack of windshields that are unspoken for. I’m talking 120 windshields for all makes and models. FYI glass shops operate on appointments. Make appointment, order glass for specific vehicle, it’s installed the next day, or so. So, this stack is out of control. I get my nose to the grindstone trying to negotiate returns and all is going much better then expected. Here comes my inexperienced GM telling me I need to cut hours and send three of four people home for the day. I explain we have 5 appointments in the coming hour and that we need the staff in order to not…
Parenthood in the modern era
I don’t have any kids. However, I’m approaching the age where my peers are all having kids and wondering when I’m taking the plunge. I’ve always maintained that my mental health wouldn’t be great for a child to witness or inherit. Lately though I’ve started to question whether I could even afford it and if I could – the hours of work I’d have to put in would make me an absent father. How can I be expected to raise a child on 40-50k a year while working 50 hour weeks? My job doesn’t offer paternity leave, new fathers use their ten vacation days for the year. It seems so hopeless that even if I did decide to start a family, I couldn’t.
I’m Canadian
So I've been having a debate with my parents over wage and how people choose to spend their money, and their solution is for people to watch what they spend (don't spend money on coffee, fast food, skip the dishes, luxuries, miscellaneous things etc) and if their job isn't paying enough they should get a better one (but not quit until they've found a better paying job) only then can they get out of the financial rut they're in. How the poor take advantage of the system. I can't really give any counter arguments since the only stats I have are from the states, so if your Canadian, do you have any advice or statistics? Cause they're starting to make me believe thats its not the circumstances you're put in but what you make of it that counts the most. (They also believe essential jobs like grocery workers or fast…
Union vs At-Will
This may be a really dumb question, but I’ve been wondering how firings work for unionized employees that work in at-will states. Does the union define fireable offenses or does the at-will state rule take precedence and employees can still be fired for anything?

The location that I work at wouldn’t let us take off work from 12/20-12/26 because it’s peak sales and they needed everyone they could get which I understand. However I live in a town with a major college in the state I live in. Most of the people that go there aren’t more than 4hr drive from their home town. At least 40% of the staff goes to this college and isn’t from this city. You are expecting them to stay and work for $11/hr compared to spending time with there families. Yea fuck that We had a tornado warning last month. The sirens started going off cause 4 tornadoes had touched down; within 5 miles of the store that work at. We have a home goods right next to us that is also owned my TJX. They closed cause their store manager had the decency to ask the general…
Bathroom Breaks
Wondering how many others appreciate the brief little mental health break they get along with a bathroom break. I’m grateful most companies still allow them and that nobody wants to really accuse anyone of taking too long of one. Anybody’s work places have crazy rules around bathroom usage?
Boss Refuse To Hand Me My Final Pay
So I worked for this housekeeping company for nearly a year, and recently just dropped this company since my mom's job is fooling around with her hours since she is older and will demand she takes five days off if someone tests positive for covid. So I need something that will provide me with the hours I need, as well as insurance. My boss was not happy, and demanded ill will for me in the future, and victimized themselves saying they had done so much for me, but I had done so much for them, they oftentimes dismiss how uncomfortable I am, and how unsafe I feel, and they failed to inform me plenty of times of their absence from work, and I was basically working their schedule So yesterday was pay day, and I still didn't receive my final pay, which is fine, I will probably get it Friday…
