I’m assuming I’m Gen Z in terms of being born in 2003. I’m curious on the concept of a two weeks notice and why people of my generation are moving away from it, though I’ve always been told to give notice. What are the upsides/downsides?

Girlfriends new job is skimping with pay

My gf started a new job about a month ago and has been grinding, working 12 days in a row and over 50 hours this week. I brought up that the OT pay will be nice and was flabbergasted when she told me she doesn’t get OT, they made her sign a contract when she was hired that stipulates she will only be paid OT if she exceeds 88 hours in a 2 weeks time frame.. I get that this part is kind of her fault for signing and just thinking its normal (still scummy by her employer though as they have her working 12 hours days so only do this because they KNOW she will be hitting OT most weeks). However they also told her she would have paid 30 min lunches since she is the only one at the store rn and can’t have someone cover for her,…

Some higher up says my coworker and I were “goofing off” because I wore two name tags

My manager’s boss’s boss came in to our store randomly before 10pm to spy on us. I could kinda tell he was someone because when his account rang up, it had an employee discount, he was all dressed up despite it being so late, and he had this soul less, but stand-offish expression. Kinda like he thought of himself better then everyone else. He seemed pretty chill because he was striking a conversation and was poking fun of my two name tags which was the response I got from customers all shift. Then he left and I thought that was it. Come the next day my manager pulls my coworker and I aside and basically tells us that this guy was her boss’s boss and was basically having a temper tantrum all day through text to her boss. Complaining about so much little stuff. Said we were goofing off and…

Starting a Union Job

I start a union job on Monday, an electrical apprenticeship. I've been trying to get in since 2019 and was delayed due to the pandemic. Since then I've worked for the state government investigating child abuse, and I've worked as a waitress. I've always felt overworked and underappreciated and underpaid. Here's to hoping the union is a good choice for me!

Company is Threating us To Work Mandatory Night Shifts/Weekend Shifts if No One Volunteers

Hi, I am going to be as vague as possible. I work in the corporate housing industry and they have seen an influx of international requests which requires someone to be working from 8pm-7am central and Saturday/Sundays day and night shifts. Our managers told us on a meeting and asked people to volunteer to be “on call” for the night shifts and Saturday/Sunday until they could find people who could actually work. Now being “on call” is not as bad as actually having to be at your desk working, but the base pay is $50 and caps out at $150 if you take “6 or more calls” for an 11 hour shift. Which equates to $13.60 an hour. Also, if you are on call during the night shift you are still expected to come in and work your 8 hour shift the next day. Now, I am a deep…

Just an inspirational story

Used to work construction (before those greedy pricks at wall street fucked it all up in 2008) One day it was so windy that the crane guy just went. “- Nope! Union rules say its not safe to use the crane in these conditions.” And he just went in to the break room and got some coffee until the wind would settle. Now i was outside bending rebar. When i was done and carrying all these rebars back, there was a sudden gust of wind, on the roof of the house we were building (8 floors) there were some metal plates just lying there. I heard some weird noise, and then a “BANG!” A sheet of metal like 3 feet times 6 feet just landed next to me, it passed right over my head, and buried itselt like 6 inces in to the ground. I am very lucky to be…

Can we all just agree *not* do pre-interview tests?

This might be better on recruiting hell, but I’m sick of employers pushing menial tasks onto potential employees. I’m not on the clock, why do I have to spend 30minutes every single application for a hiring company to determine whether or not I’m good at scheduling?? Let’s face it, the employer is still going to look at my resume, still going to ask me for a phone interview, and is still going to talk to me whether I do those tests or not. And I’m sure it doesn’t really help HR. And, god, they are such a time waster! Like, what is the point?? “Dance, monkey, dance!” I miss the days where I could turn in a paper resume/application.
