What it’s like being mentally disabled and work.

Right from the start, I want to argue that I'm not in the worst situation I could be. I'm working in an office, even though my department has a lot of problems, I'm not working for f***ing Primark or Amazon. In the meantime, I am also disabled due to my bipolar disorder, a condition that among other things makes it extremely difficult to focus, to motivate myself, and the medication (antipsychotics, no less) makes me exhausted, physically weak and lately it has been messing with my bowels in a worrying manner. I should be resting, but I have no other choice than working this job. I don't know how to best describe it, it's mostly related to crisis planning and risk management. This position is regarded as rather prestigeous and important for the people around me. My wage is however barely above the legal minimum, but that's another story. I…

Sketchy recruiter forced me to take another job.

I have been offered a temporary contract job that sounds really good and has the opportunity to turn into a perm position. And I got another offer that is very good and already permanent, but less money. The recruiter for the temp position has annoyed the living shit out of me. He keeps saying all these overly positive things. He seems to be making up things the managers at the job are saying. Example: “The owner is walking around to each employee telling them about you and how exciting you are and how loved you already are”. That’s weird (and gross). But this guy is my point person until I’m officially hired. I can’t deal with him. He never lets me speak or ask questions. If I email him he insists on calling me and keeping me on the phone forever. I tried explaining I need one day off for…

Unpaid internship (work in exchange for the experience of working) is unreasonable and should be illegal

Companies always say they give experience during an internship. They say this experience will help the interns find a good job later in their lives, an advantage they wouldn't have otherwise. Therefore the company feels that this enhanced position in the job market should be the reward for internship, and money should not. But this is not the full picture. It is in the interest of the company to have experienced workforce. They benefit from the interns' growing experience by creating a job market where they can choose from experienced workers. The company gains advantage when the job market has many experienced people to choose from. The internship benefits the company as well as the intern – beyond the direct benefits of the work done, which only benefits the company. So the experience given to interns benefits both parties – the entire industry, in fact. Therefore this experience is not…

“Boys Will Be Boys,” my store manager’s response to my complaints

I worked at a fast food chain as an overnight manager, and I got paid 12.00$ per hour. That store expected a lot despite paying me minimum wage as a manager who had extra duties. Anyways, I had this male coworker who was probably a junior in high school while I was a second year college student. He made such crude remarks. First, he talked about how “thick” I was while working. He'd talk like this about me to the other male coworkers. Then he proceeded to be in my personal space, literally he was a finger close to pressing against me. He crouched down abruptly while I was walking, his face near my boobs. He talked to me in the office alone, cat calling me. I brought this all up to the store manager. Her response? I gotta understand, because you know? Boys Will Be Boys. Needless to say,…
