We''re obviously all looking at the current state of terrible work affairs, that is present in the US. Which is made painfully apparent, by just following this sub. I just want you all to remember: “what happens over there, matters over here.” I fear a lot of worker rights and benefits are gonna be taken away from us. As the completely outlandish things i see from this sub, in terms of low pay, poor treatment, ect. Is becoming more and more common in Europe…. I fear we're gonna be just like the US soon. Maybe i'm paranoid, but i feel like all this stuff is gonna reach us here before long. Before anyone asks. i'm Danish. Apologies if the english was bad.
So it happened… on my 8th day at work …
Got hired into middle management after 2 years of trying to find a job that pays more than $22 an hour. Got hired. $27 and hour. No problem new company and industry so far so good. They started me on a hourly wage. OT only on approval. In a meeting with the owner 5 minutes into OT. “You were off 5 minutes ago. Better sign out before OT kicks in or we will need to have a talk tomorrow” ….. Then continues the meeting for another 10 minutes….
Modern jobs are a joke
I'm working a shitty casual job at the moment, because there are no decent jobs. Modern jobs: -menial – no benefits -shit management – roles 3 job roles into 1! – productivity isnt rewarded -casual roles ( no unions) -SHIT Pay! Job red flags – “we are a family” “has to be a fast learner” -” commison only so your result reflect your work” competitive rate ( no rate shown) “has to have a flexible schedule” “needs x amount of experience and bachelors degree” “ReAl Team PlAyEr” Anymore you can think of? It's a means to an end for me, but sometimes it just feels so pointless. It angers me that boomers could live and have a house on 1 job and then I see retires and boomers walking around doing fuck all, while gen x, melenials and Gen Z Pickup the slack! What will happen to our generation will…
I work in a small department of 8 people. We are under one of the C Suite execs. There is a manager on the team. Half the workers report to the manager, the other half to the C Suite. About a month ago, the manager was promoted to a director level position. No notice to the team. No added responsibilities. No replacement for the manager position. Why would management do that? I am now really thinking about leaving as there is no reason to promote to another level without added responsibility, and it devalues the rest of the team. I would appreciate all thoughts and opinions. TIA.
Fast food is supposed to be “fast” and if you make a big mistake (which I did) it looks bad on you because you can’t afford to waste time. I hate working like this because I’m already hard on myself, but I can’t quit because I need to afford fall tuition. It’s only been a week but the thought of work makes me anxious.
There has been X months since the layoff and now you are hiring. What has changed about the company, it's finances or the organization's hierarchy since the layoff? Was the role I am currently interviewing for part of that layoff? If yes, why was it eliminated then if you are hiring for it now? If a company tries to dodge the questions, you are being hired for a temp position. It won't be called that but when it comes time for the next round, know that your head is already in the noose. That uncertainty should result in a higher, not lower, salary. If these companies are going to use mass layoffs to manage the bottom line, hold them accountable.
My university offers a program where students can get partial tuition refunds for working a certain number of hours a week, and recently I asked my former employer ( upscale bar in socal) to send me my timesheets so that I could apply for the program. When I received my timesheets, I was surprised to notice that I routinely worked 5.5-6 hours a shift and never received a 30 minute lunch break. That being said, I was given a 10 minute break every shift. I never signed anything that said I didn’t want a break and when I ask managers for one during long shifts they would tell me that a 10 minute break is all I am eligible for. At my new job, the administration of 30 minute breaks is taken VERY seriously and when I talked to my manager about my former job he was certain that they…
