I hope this is okay to post here, please let me know if not and I'll remove it! So I've been trying to apply to jobs as a recruiter and a lot of applications ask for 3 references immediately and I have no one to ask. I had to leave my last job abruptly cause I had to take care of my dying grandmother and nobody n family wanted to step up but unfortunately this blindsided my boss and coworkers who were pissed cause I only got hired 5 months ago and was going to play an integral role in a lot of projects in development. I haven't stayed in contact with other boss's and coworkers from previous positions and I feel like it'd be really inappropriate to put them down having not talked to them in years. I’ve been in the workforce for over 30 years and it has always rubbed me the wrong way that workers need to “request” time off. Doesn’t that phrasing seem odd to you? It’s my life so I should be just telling my employer that I will be taking off x days. Not requesting. Not giving them a choice. Not asking if I can. Paid or unpaid time off shouldn’t be a request. You don’t own my time.

So I work from home. Health system IT for one of the biggest companies in the country. This year, we got: No holiday party (with the exception of 2020 for obvious reasons, this is the first time they've done this) No Christmas bonus. An email from “HR” regarding a holiday gift card, but when clicking the link in the email, we are presented with a message that this was a phishing campaign (I thought that was especially cruel). Not to mention that annual cost of living increases are far below inflation, and have been for a few years now. I'm not sure what else to do at this point. I'm probably older than most of you, so simply looking for another job would be a little more difficult for me, considering the years I have invested at this company. Just looking to vent, I guess. I don't know. Happy holidays…

Any ideas on how to escape this conundrum and still make a living wage? I feel like we weren't meant to be working this many hours a year.

Unpopular opinion below: ​ While i feel for those of you that have to deal with fallout from that… i feel like r/antiwork is not the place to ask: “can i be sued” or “can they force me to stay longer” or whatever. I feel like your most logical step would be to check your contract you signed when you signed on. If you're in the US, make sure youre in a at will state (i think there's like 2 states that aren't at will) and go from there. And if you have any doubts, shouldnt you seek legal help? Not tell all of us on reddit?
