This is a throwaway account and I am looking for some thoughts, ideas, or advice. I am currently working at a coffee shop/bakery for 12/hr + tip credit (which are minimal anyway.) I mostly planned on working here as low commitment work to support myself until I could find a better paying job that suits my life better. That being said, it's been just over a year since I started in this high turnover position so I have grown into the role and have more responsibilities and insight into the business. It is a light staff of 8 baristas (including the owner who manages weekends) and 2 bakers. After learning that the current owner is looking to sell her business, one of the baristas (call her Betty Barista) decided to purchase the business and lease with help from her parents taking out the loan since she is only 21…
Worst email signatures
Some of the email signatures I have come across lately in and outside my organisation are spectacularly dripping with bullshit, which seems to be a trend that is gaining traction. The one that stands out the most for me ‘Stay foolish..stay hungry.’ What now?
Long story short, I was in marketing at my current company. My boss (the CMO) is absent for more 75% of the year and knows nothing about marketing. He inherited the company with his brother from his Dad, who retired and was the original owner. I had all these idea for marketing and how I wanted to grow it and take on more responsibility. He didn’t want to manage me, so instead, without asking, he moved me to the communications team where I am basically a robot doing email campaigns for our 60+ clients. I don’t even know how they sent any emails last year cause everything is so unorganized. There is another girl that works fully remote and does all the clients ongoing emails. She is sending emails everyday. Honestly, we could use more help, cause between the two of us it’s already too much. My company decided to…
I have had multiple jobs, and none of them have led to a long-term commitment. I am starting a new role tomorrow, and the company and people seem nice. I just can't find the motivation or will to be excited about it at all, it's like this with all jobs, I almost plan my expiry date within a business. Am I mentally sick or is the world of work genuinely losing worth for human endeavour? I have taken the job for money – plain and simple.
I know this doesn't really belong in here, but i'm desperate, unemployed and because of our new bourgoise government, soon everyone who doesn't have a full time job, their ass turns to grass and government will mow it. I have a job interview to this big company, and the position i applied was customer service job in their office. Now the thing is i have never worked for that kind of a company before. Their speciality is testing and inspecting in a lot of different industries like for example construction. I need all of your wisdom to get through this without getting my cv thrown into trash immediately after interview.
Last Friday we received an e-mail from the company CEO, announcing that the current home office policy is changing from the current 2 days from home/3 days at the office. A section of his e-mail follows: “As a result, starting November 1st, we would like to inform you that we are adjusting our policy, allowing maximum one day of working from home per week going forward, with the boundary condition that the home office day cannot be a Monday or Friday and needs to be aligned with your manager. We strongly believe that this measure will be a crucial step to maintaining our leadership position in a fast-paced environment.” We had a global layoff recently and it seems that they're trying to increase productivity at all costs by bringing people into the office. I feel that they want to increase vigilance by keeping people on their watch. Here goes my…
Forced to use PTO when I didn’t ask off.
I am a veterinary technician who works in the internal medicine department. There are two doctors in the department and one of them has taken this next Friday off. The company will not allow the same amount of technicians to be working in the department with only one doctor. We are being asked to take the day off, but we HAVE to use our PTO. I did not ask off for Friday, it is not my problem that one of the doctors took off. I have only a few PTO days left for possible sick days/them also making us use them for holidays. Am I wrong to email a higher up? I understand this isn’t my current managers decision, but this is not okay. I use my PTO for my own time, and we already have to save a lot of it because they make us use it on holidays…
Back when I worked in Human Resources, company policy stated that before an employee could be fired by their boss approval must come from the Human Resources Director and a member of senior management. I thought this was a fair system because it stops out of control managers to make a rash decision based on emotion and fire someone with thinking. Also to protect the company from a wrongful discharge case connected to discrimination. When the manager came to me in My role as Human Resources Director to get permission to fire their employee, I would ask him/her why they wanted to terminate the employee. The majority of the time they would use one of these old standbys: No one liked the employee (without giving any details) It is just not a good fit This shows me that most employment terminations is based on personality mismatch not true work performance.…
I've been in my current role for 6 months. Though I like my team and some aspects of the job, there's too many things that I don't like. Several other team members are in the same position as me also. I've got a 6 monthly review coming up in a few days. Should I be honest and tell them I'm looking elsewhere, or keep it to myself? I don't think there's really anything they can do to stop me looking, but I think they need to know that there are problems. Any thoughts?
