Parenthood in the modern era

I don’t have any kids. However, I’m approaching the age where my peers are all having kids and wondering when I’m taking the plunge. I’ve always maintained that my mental health wouldn’t be great for a child to witness or inherit. Lately though I’ve started to question whether I could even afford it and if I could – the hours of work I’d have to put in would make me an absent father. How can I be expected to raise a child on 40-50k a year while working 50 hour weeks? My job doesn’t offer paternity leave, new fathers use their ten vacation days for the year. It seems so hopeless that even if I did decide to start a family, I couldn’t.
