I live in Canada so I’m unsure if my experience is relative to my location. But I’m interested if any of you have a similar experience!
I’ve been a part time worker in social services for 2 years. However, due to staffing issues I frequently work full time and overtime hours.
Despite working more than a full time employee would, I don’t reap any benefits of a full timer. No vacation, no sick days, no dental or medical coverage.
Furthermore, I have been employed by many companies who do this intentionally. Hiring solely young, part time employees in order to acquire the fruits of their labour without giving any sort of benefits in return.
To summarize: part time workers should be getting benefits. Especially if employers rely on part time workers to relieve them of their staffing shortages. Wouldn’t it be common courtesy to support ALL of your workers with medical coverage and paid time off? Especially if you want a thriving work force?
But, that’s just my two cents.
