Promotion process at huge corporate company

A bit of a rant, but also could be informative. I work for a gigantic financial corporation. This is the first job I have ever had where there are no promotions, there are interview processes for lateral or vertical moves. I recently found out after having to “apply” for a different role within the same team. Weird? I am used to the manager simply promoting the most qualified, so this confused me. I had found out they use some type of grading system during interviews based on situational based questions unrelated to the position(name a time you went above and beyond, what was the result). These types of ridiculous questions and we must use the STAR method to answer. They do not take any consideration in regards to performance, accomplishments, or experience. Long story short, I did not get the position. Almost exactly what I wrote above, happened.

Im just so absolutely dumbfounded as to how this could possibly be beneficial for any team or company. Is this a scapegoat to avoid any favoritism? Or a way to avoid any potential lawsuits for potential discrimination?

Weird world, I used to think going above and beyond would be the driving force to advancing in a career.

This made me realize, job hopping is the most effective way to build your income. My strategy moving forward will be to invest 3-5 years with one institution, apply for better position with competitor, make my rounds..then come back full circle for a VP position

If you read this, thanks. Hopefully it wasn’t a waste if your time. These procedures companies follow are the reason I am a very strong supporter of this movement.
